Chiaki Kobayashi is the managing partner in Finnegan’s Tokyo office. She practices all aspects of intellectual property (IP) law, including client counseling, prosecution, opinion preparation, due diligence investigations, litigation, and post-grant review proceedings, with a focus on the chemical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries. With her fluency in Japanese and deep cultural appreciation, Chiaki has significant experience counseling Japanese clients on strategic IP development, patent portfolio management, due diligence, patent prosecution, litigation, and pre-litigation strategies. Chiaki’s litigation practice includes numerous aspects of patent disputes, including coordinating discovery; developing infringement and invalidity strategies; preparing fact and technical expert witnesses; drafting a wide range of motions and briefs; and taking and defending depositions. She has particular experience representing pharmaceutical patent holders in litigation arising under the U.S. Hatch-Waxman Act and regularly advises on enforcement strategy in high stakes matters involving Japanese parties.
