Karl serves as Johnson Controls’ Chief Intellectual Property (IP) and Information Technology (IT) Counsel. In his ten-year career at Johnson Controls, Karl previously held the position of commercial counsel for a range of the company's businesses, including Building Automation Controls, Digital Solutions, Industrial Refrigeration (IR), Chillers, and Retail. Karl is a registered U.S. Patent Lawyer.
Karl is recognized as a passionate leader in ideation and the development of IP portfolios.
In addition to his role at Johnson Controls, Karl was previously a member of the Wisconsin Governor's AI Task Force, contributing to the advancement of artificial intelligence initiatives within the state of Wisconsin. Karl began his legal career at Foley & Lardner LLP and was an Equity Partner at the firm prior to moving to Johnson Controls.
Karl enjoys spending time with his wife, his 10-year-old daughter, and their two dogs. His hobbies include exploring all things related to technology and artificial intelligence, listening to music, weightlifting, cooking, and collecting wine.
