Charles Varvaro is the managing director for IP and worldwide head of IBM’s patent portfolio. He also leads the technology alliances for IBM Research. Charles’ tenure at IBM has been defined by his unyielding commitment to his clients and delivering results while holding to the highest ethical standards. He is known for building deep, strategic relationships with the Fortune 500, his unstoppable energy, and knocking down roadblocks to success with integrity and humour. His highly respected work ethic drives the highest performing and most loyal teams. His background in driving digital transformation includes deep expertise in global corporate strategy development, corporate sales, marketing, data centres, and cloud services. He is currently the worldwide leader for IBM’s IP, technology alliances, and patent licensing, accountable for patent litigation and leading the litigation strategy against infringers of the IBM patent portfolio. He and his team focus on creating IP income opportunities in services for IBM’s most strategic clients. Some of the specific areas of focus are quantum, healthcare, artificial intelligence, security, and materials discovery. Charles’ impact in this area cannot be understated as IBM continues to dominate as the world leader in patent filing and translating that marker into tangible client success, strengthening IBM’s value partnerships and global influence. Previously Charles led Global Technology Services (GTS), North America, supporting clients in public sector markets, including media and communications markets. He also led IBM’s GTS business in Canada where he helped transform many companies including Bombardier Aerospace and Transportation, one of IBM’s largest and most strategic accounts. He integrated the worldwide office of the CIO into a single organisation and transformed it to an IaaS on IBM Cloud Platforms. Before that, he was stationed in Johannesburg, South Africa, supporting the expansion of IBM’s Sub-Sahara business. Charles initially joined IBM supporting the telecommunications business where he successfully led engagement teams in pursuit of strategic outsourcing and transformation deals globally
