Katie O’Brien is the head of patent strategy at IBM, bringing over a decade of experience at the intersection of IP and complex M&A transactions. She specialises in structuring, negotiating, and executing deals where IP is a central value driver. She has led and supported wide range of transactions including acquisitions, divestitures, spin-outs, minority investments, and strategic collaborations across advanced technology sectors such as AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing. Throughout her career at IBM, Katie has held roles spanning corporate development, business development, IP monetisation, and consulting. She is a highly experienced dealmaker known for crafting creative transaction structures, including multi-million-dollar agreements involving IP licensing, equity stakes, and joint development partnerships. She has also played a role in shaping IP frameworks for major transactions, such as IBM’s divestiture of its Watson Health assets. Katie holds a BA in mathematics and economics from Lafayette College.
