Michelle Lee is founder and chief executive officer of Obsidian Strategies (architects for AI-driven strategies) which advises organisations on implementing their most impactful AI opportunities and provides education on AI and AI governance. Before Obsidian, The Honorable Michelle Lee was a senior executive and vice president (AI) at Amazon Web Services and the lead business executive in charge of AWS’ responsible AI efforts. Before Amazon, Ms Lee served as the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is the first woman to hold this position in our country’s history. From 2017 to 2018, Ms Lee held the appointment as the Herman Phleger Visiting Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. Ms Lee currently serves on the boards of MassMutual (Fortune 100) and MIT and is a presidentially appointed member of the American Bar Association’s Task on Artificial Intelligence and the Law. Earlier, Ms Lee served as deputy general counsel and head of patents and patent strategy at Google, partner at Fenwick & West and technologist at MIT’s AI and Hewlett-Packard’s Research Labs. Ms Lee holds a BS and MS from MIT in electrical engineering and computer science and JD from Stanford Law. She served as a law clerk on the US District Court for the Norther District of California and US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
